April 10th The 2008 Five Ventures Business Plan Competition and Conference, produced by the Charlotte Research Institute, takes place on the campus of UNC Charlotte. Come see 15 high-tech companies within the Biotechnology, IT, Advanced Manufacturing, Green Tech and Service/Retail sectors compete for more than $100,000 in cash and in-kind services.

Stories under the Stars

April 19th Begins a series of free programs, cosponsored by the Kannapolis Branch Library and the Kannapolis Parks and Recreation Department, that will feature traditional, musical and theatrical storytelling and a host of other exciting family and literary-oriented programs at the Kannapolis Library. All performances begin on or about 7 p.m. For more information, please call 704/920-4343.

April 19th Kinetics Dance Group, Unspoken Word, storytelling through dance.
Performance begins at 7:00 PM.

April 22nd - Author event and luncheon featuring Dr. Cathy Pickens, attorney, Queens University professor and author of “Southern Fried,” “Done Gone Wrong,” and “Hog Wild” will be sponsored by the Kannapolis Friends of the Library from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Village Park in Kannapolis. Pickens’ fictional Dacus, SC, “nestled into the foothills of the Blue Ridge,” will strike familiar chords with all Southerners, whether born or transplanted. The Splash Pad & Rotary Train Station in Village Park will begin operation on weekends, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. until Mid-June when school is dismissed for summer holidays. Following public school closing for summer holidays, the Splash Park and train will be in operation every day until school resumes. Cost for an all-day pass to the Splash Pad is $1 per person. The Rotary Train ride is also $1 per person.

9th &10th- Village Fest - This traditional event, now in its 27th year, features Bluegrass Gospel Music by the Hoppers on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. on the stage near the Visitors Center on West Avenue. Hot air balloons will be set up on the Village Streets for a beautiful balloon glow at 9:00 p.m. following the free concert. Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m., the balloons will lift off over the streets of the Village. The Russell Terrier Dog Races begin promptly at 11:30. Dance contests during the afternoon feature some of the region’s finest shaggers in North and South Carolina. The Center City Beach Band also performs during the afternoon. Saturday night features the rock and roll country music of the County Line band. Village Fest concludes with a brilliant fireworks display sponsored by the North Carolina Research Campus. Craft and food vendors will line the streets of the Village throughout the event.

Summer Movie Mania

“Movie Mania” begins May 23 and runs every other Friday through August 15. The Kannapolis Parks and Recreation Department will host popular, family-edited hit movies, shown on a 40’ x 20’ big screen at the Village Park Amphitheater. All movies begin when the sun goes down at about 8:45 p.m. and are free to the public. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs and blankets. Refreshments may be purchased at the Village Park concession stand. Call 704/920-4343 for more info.

The Summer Concert Series will again be hosted by the Kannapolis Parks and Recreation Department for six weekends during the summer months. Each concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the Village Park Amphitheater. Events are free to the public. For further info, please call 704/920-4343.

14th-Dancing Under the Stars:
This summer’s ballet performance, Who Cares, is brought to the community by the Piedmont Dance Theater, which showcases local student dancers as well as principal dancers from across the country. Founded in 2003 by Rebecca Massey Wiley, owner/co-artistic director of Piedmont Dance Conservatory, PDT is recognized as the only nonprofit dance company in Cabarrus and Rowan counties and the surrounding area. 7 p.m. Village Park Amphitheater. 22nd-27th- Dedication Celebration of David H. Murdock Core Laboratory Building

22nd-Field Trip for Kannapolis City Schools Elementary School Children to visit the campus. (Grades K–4). Winners of KCS-sponsored art contests and writing contests will tour Core Laboratory.

22nd- Field Trip for Kannapolis Middle & Intermediate school students (Grades 5-8). Teachers identify future life science students through competition for agriculture- and nutrition-related projects. Students are given options for projects they can work on during Summer, 2008 and submit at the beginning of school in August for judging. KCS Science teacher Ed Bugaiski will coordinate competition.

22nd-Science Fair winners at KCS’ A.L. Brown High School (9-12) will be awarded a field trip to tour NCRC and attend a Science Seminar conducted by Dr. Steve Leath, UNC System Vice President of Research.

23rd-Rowan Cabarrus Community College Day

24th CMC - Northeast Appreciation Day with Luncheon for Physicians and Administration and Cabarrus College of Health Sciences faculty. Speaker to be determined.

25th-University Day and Stakeholder Appreciation Dinner. Each of the seven University partners celebrate with Chemistry 101 in Laboratory of David H. Murdock Core Laboratory Building.

26th-Dedication Ceremony 10 a.m. on lawn at David H. Murdock Core Laboratory Building.

27th-City of Kannapolis Day with tours and special events at different locations throughout the city. Schedule to follow.

October

31st-Happy Healthy Halloween: Bring all your little ghouls and goblins to the NCRC Village for healthy, but still yummy, treats. And maybe a few tricks, too! Sponsored by Dole Foods; kids and parents alike will marvel at the newer, healthier versions of some of age-old treats. November

Begin or renew family holiday traditions in the Village at the North Carolina Research Campus. Share your wish list with Santa, take a horse-drawn carriage ride beneath thousands of twinkling lights and enjoy 18th-century-costumed carolers.

28th & 29th-Reap the benefit of someone else’s hard labor at the Farmer’s Holiday Market from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Old Bank Building, 201 West Avenue. Come and select from a variety of fresh winter fruits and vegetables, homemade breads, desserts, jellies and jams; plus one-of-a-kind handmade crafts.

December

6th-Breakfast with Santa: Enjoy a light breakfast with Old Saint Nicholas, get cozy while Mrs. Claus tells a few stories and experience the fun of the juggling/comedy show. Bring your letters to Santa and place them in the North Pole mailbox. There will be a “Make It - Take It” Christmas Craft booth for each of the children. Cost is $3 per person. 6th-Kannapolis Christmas Parade: Experience the sights and sounds of Christmas as the community gathers for the annual Christmas parade through the Village. A picturesque scene awaits you as an illuminated evening parade marches under thousands of twinkling lights through the streets of the Williamsburg-inspired Village. Parade begins at 6 p.m.
