The North Carolina Research Campus
The NCRC is a 350-acre life science research center located in Kannapolis, NC, outside of Charlotte, that brings together academia, industry, government, and non-profit organizations to advance the fields of agriculture, human health, and nutrition.
Main Campus
At the center of the campus is the 311,000-square-foot David H. Murdock Core Laboratory. The core laboratory houses the state-of-the-art advanced equipment and instrumentation of the David H. Murdock Research Institute. The DHMRI is available to industry, academic, or non-profit organizations on or off the campus. Zeiss MicroImaging is the light microscopy provider. The UNC Charlotte Bioinformatics Research Center, Monsanto, and General Mills are also located in the core lab building.
The Plants for Human Health Institute (PHHI) and The Nutrition Research Institute (NRI) buildings are two additional locations for research in wetlab space with adjacent offices and conference rooms. The research programs of NC State University, Dole Foods, Appalachian State University, and UNC Charlotte are located in the PHHI, and UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Greensboro, NC A&T University, and NC Central University in the NRI.
The 62,000-square-foot Rowan-Cabarrus Biotechnology Training Center is within walking distance of all the campus partners. Rowan-Cabarrus offers associate degrees in biotechnology and is the lead partner in training a skilled workforce to support the groundbreaking research occurring at the NCRC.
The Village
The downtown area adjacent to the NCRC's main campus houses campus partners like Duke University and Sensory Spectrum as well as restaurants, a coffee shop, and movie theater.
Medical Corridor
The 65,000-square-foot Cabarrus Health Alliance building is under construction adjacent to the campus. The Carolinas Healthcare System building will be under construction within a year adding another 65,000 square feet of Class A medical office space. The buildings are the anchors of the campus' medical corridor.
LabCorp BioRepository
Less than a mile from the NCRC, LabCorp (Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings) built a 40,000-square-foot biorepository to store research samples for pharmaceutical and biotech companies as well as thousands of samples for Duke University and its MURDOCK Study. Highly trained personnel, extensive power back-up and redundancy systems, environmental controls, and state-of-the-art freezers, monitors and alarm systems ensure a cost-effective combination of high-quality sample storage and safety.
Future Development
With 800,000 square feet built out and 200,000 square feet available to lease or build-to-suit, the NCRC has more space than most research parks. Future construction will add thousands more square feet of additional wet labs, office space, and medical offices as well as a conference and wellness center, lodging, housing, and a retail area.
