Victor J. Dzau, MD

Chancellor for Health Affairs
President and CEO, Duke University Health System
Duke University
Durham, North Carolina

Dr. Dzau was appointed chancellor for health affairs of Duke University and President and CEO of the Duke University Health System in July 2004. He is also the James B. Duke Professor of Medicine and Director of the Mandel Center for Hypertension Research and the Director of Molecular Genomics and Vascular Biology at Duke University.

Before coming to Duke, Dr. Dzau was the Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic (Medicine) at Harvard Medical School, Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Physician in Chief and Director of Research at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston. Prior to his work at Harvard and Brigham and Women's, he served as an Arthur Bloomfield Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Stanford University.

Dr. Dzau's academic interests are in translational research and global health. His laboratory has studied the molecular and genetic mechanisms of hypertension and cardiovascular disease and applied gene and stem cell discoveries to develop novel therapeutic approaches. At the institutional level, since becoming Chancellor for Health Affairs in 2004, he has guided the establishment of the Duke Translational Medicine Institute to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries to clinical care. Another area of Dr. Dzau’s passion is in eliminating health disparities among underrepresented populations and the socioeconomically disadvantaged both at home and abroad. In 2001, together with Dr. Paul Farmer, Dr. Dzau created a new Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School to reduce disparities and improve health care through training, research, education, and service. Since arriving at Duke, he has been actively working with university and faculty leaders to establish a campus-wide, multidisciplinary Institute on Global Health.

The recipient of many awards and honors, Dr. Dzau received the MERIT Award of National Institute of Health (NIH), the Gustav Nylin Medal by the Swedish Royal College of Medicine, the Polzer Prize of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Novartis Award for Hypertension Research by the American Heart Association (which also named him one of its Distinguished Scientists for 2004), the Max Delbruck Medal by the Max Delbruck Center for Molecular Medicine, Berlin, Germany, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. He has received honorary degrees (Doctor Honoris Causa) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and the National University of Cordoba in Argentina. In 2005, Harvard University established the Victor J. Dzau Chair of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Victor J. Dzau Lecture on Global Health at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Dzau has served on numerous committees and advisory boards, including, previously, the Executive Committee of The Academy at Harvard Medical School (of which he is a founding member) and the boards of Stanford Health System, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Partners Healthcare. Currently, he serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Duke University Health System, Genzyme Corporation, PepsiCo, Inc., Alnylam and Medtronic Inc., and the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce. He has been elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts. As previous Chairman of the NIH Cardiovascular Disease Advisory Committee, he served on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the NIH and currently serves on the IOM Council.
