Dr. Williams was appointed Senior Vice Chancellor of the School of Medicine at Duke University in 2007 overseeing both the Duke School of Medicine and the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Williams served as Dean of the Duke School of Medicine for six years. He was educated in public affairs, internal medicine, cardiology, biochemistry and molecular biology at Princeton University, Duke University, Harvard University (Massachusetts General Hospital), Oxford University, and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He served on the faculty of Duke University and of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center until joining the School of Medicine as Dean in 2001.
As a physician-scientist, Dr. Williams discovered genes, proteins and pathways that control development, proliferation, cell size, and differentiation of cardiac and skeletal muscle cells (myocytes). He defined basic principles of how these cells adapt to changing physiological demands associated with environmental stresses such as exercise and disease states such as congestive heart failure. He has led clinical, research and educational programs in cardiovascular medicine.
Dr. Williams has served as president of the Association of University Cardiologists, Chairman of the Research Committee of the American Heart Association, on the editorial boards of Science, Journal of Clinical Investigation, American Journal of Physiology, Circulation and Circulation Research, on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health and the Board of External Advisors of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. He is a Director on the corporate boards of Bristol-Myers Squibb and Laboratory Corporation of America, a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
