Breakthrough research... under one roof.

The David H. Murdock Research Institute will not only advance scientific discovery, it will advance how science is conducted. By bringing together a variety of instruments and disciplines under one roof, the DHMRI Laboratory will support unprecedented collaboration among top scientists, researchers and universities. With a focus on health and nutrition, the DHMRI will pave the path to new discoveries in a number of areas, including biotechnology, obesity, cancer, agriculture and medical devices. Using the latest in lab technology, and building on the collective power of shared knowledge, researchers and scientists will be able to bring new breakthroughs to market faster than ever before.

Landmark M.U.R.D.O.C.K. Study Announced

The Measurement to Understand Reclassification of Disease of Cabarrus and Kannapolis (M.U.R.D.O.C.K.) Study is a long-term study outlined with tiered approaches that will create a powerful engine to improve disease classification and population health. By utilizing the multi-disciplinary expertise of clinicians, scientists, bioinformatists, healthcare providers and many others from Duke University and local communities as well as a generous gift of $35 million from Mr. David H. Murdock, the M.U.R.D.O.C.K. Study will gather and generate data that will not only reclassify diseases but will aid in the retooling of healthcare practices and administration and enable improved prevention practices among sub-populations of patients with varying risk profiles.

Ultimately, this unprecedented research opportunity is expected to rewrite the textbook of medicine by applying modern-day technologies to identify genomic linkages across major chronic diseases and disorders that are today’s leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Duke leaders, including Drs. Robert Califf, John McHutchison, and Geoff Ginsburg are providing scientific oversight to the M.U.R.D.O.C.K. Study while Victoria Christian is the Study’s executive manager. In partnership with local healthcare providers and the Cabarrus community, the M.U.R.D.O.C.K. Study will pursue its goals outlined in each of its Horizons.
