Connected Campus
From day one, the NC General Assembly, the NC Biotechnology Center, NCBIO, the city of Kannapolis and other leading organizations have supported the NCRC and continue to provide the backing that ensures the campus' continued development and success.
NCRC is part of a larger biotechnology and life science industry that is valued at $64 billion annually to the state, employs over 59,000 people in 539 companies, many of which are located on the state's seven research parks. The state of North Carolina is recognized as third in the nation in the life sciences with leadership in vaccines, pharmaceuticals, biomanufacturing, agricultural biotechnology, biofuels, nanobiotechnology, nutrion and nutraceuticals, and regenerative medicine.
The campus is located less than thirty minutes north of Charlotte and is part of the quickly evolving science and energy industry in the region. Over 130 people work on the NCRC for the universities and businesses. It's estimated that each researcher hired at the campus has the potential to create up to eight jobs. According to a 2008 economic analysis by Market Street Services, Inc. of Atlanta, jobs at the NCRC are estimated to reach 5,535 by the completion of the campus' build-out. The NCRC is expected to attract additional 9,291 jobs to Cabarrus and Rowan counties by 2032 due to agglomeration effects. By 2032, the total impact from NCRC is estimated to be 37,450 jobs with an estimated annual income of $2.1 billion. The NCRC is a place of scientific discovery and a vital economic driver for Kannapolis and the Charlotte region.
